BEYOND THE OVEN
Hello! Let’s talk shall we?
1. I am so OVER this polar vortex 5.0 nonsense whatever. It’s becoming the worst winter in history and I am sure folks in Atlanta and Texas are agreeing with me right now
2. Did you know there are rules to taking selfies? What you didn’t know either? My 12 year niece schooled me this past weekend when she and I had some quality time together.
Apparently only 60% of your face should be in the picture and it should always be angled. And you should have some sort of expression. Eh, too much work for me and I don’t like my face that much.
If you haven’t yet, check out the valentine’s day baking party we hosted together last weekend. So much fun!!
3. Talking about nieces that are almost teenagers in a month. They are great to hang around and talk to because their perspective of the world is so beautiful and unique!! They make you realize how old you are (almost 30 arghhh!!) and how One Direction makes bad music that should NEVER be listened to on super loud volume. Just saying. Hurts the head (and soul) at my age.
4. The hubs made this braised beef recipe last week for dinner. Best beef I’ve ever had. So tender and just delicious. Thanks Krista for a great recipe. What did you have this week that you loved? Share please! I am always looking for new recipes to try.
5. Talking about new things, I started wearing make-up this week. I should probably clarify that statement before you think I’m a cave woman. I usually only wear make-up for special occasions (date nights, weddings etc) but I figured I should be normal and/or start acting my age and put on some make-up before I leave the house. This week I started with only foundation powder since everything else is too much for me. Baby steps. However, I have noticed that my foundation (MAC Studio Fix Powder) doesn’t last more than 2-3 hours and my oily face breaks through it. This wasn’t a problem before since I will only be wearing it for the night. But now I am in search for a) a long-lasting foundation that can last the work day and b) maybe a primer? Any suggestions?
6. I am in the market for an Ice-cream maker. I am finally taking the plunge so that this Spring (which I hope will eventually be here) I can start indulging in homemade ice-cream recipes. Of course I will share with you! Do you have a favorite brand I should look at? I’m trying not to spend above $50.
7. Thanks to a certain housemate who was at the Super Bowl last weekend working and who kindly brought back the diseases of America into the house, I am now sick. The past two days have been miserable with stuffy nose and cloudy headaches. Hopefully, by the end of the weekend it will be all cleared up.
Till then my friends. I will be on the couch so please let me live vicariously through you 🙂 What are you doing this weekend?
Your party with the girls sounded like so much fun, and I loved your Instagram photos! I love hanging out with my teenage nieces, too — they’re so adorable. The fact that I’m surrounded by men at home has nothing to do with that 🙂 I just bought a Cuisinart frozen yogurt/sorbet/ice cream maker on Amazon for $50! It’s a beautiful bright red too, my favorite color. Feel better soon! 🙂
Hhaha being around men all the time could make you enjoy your teenage nieces’ company a bit more 🙂 I will definitely look on Amazon. Thanks for the recommendation Marcie!
Aaw, sorry to hear you’re sick Zainab, hope you rest up and feel better soon my friend 🙂 Yum, Krista’s braised beef short ribs did look good, I can’t wait to try that soon 🙂 If you have a Kitchenaid mixer already – I use the Kitchenaid Ice Cream Maker attachment and it works really well and the price can be pretty good if you buy it when you get it on sale along with mailing in the Kitchenaid rebates and it doesn’t take up too much room in your cupboard – but gotta warn you that they are a bit heavy though hehe.
Thanks Kelly! I am feeling better. I tried resting up this weekend. Missed out on some baking but I need to regain my strength back. I will look into the kitchen aid attachment. I didn’t think about that since I have the mixer. Thanks for the suggestion. I hope you are having a great weekend 🙂
I’ve got a few 12-year-old students who are actually quite fun to talk to outside of class (i.e. when they aren’t being forced to talk in English)…but they do sometimes make me feel old!
As for make-up, I don’t wear any either. No one ever taught be about it and sometimes I think about experimenting with it but I don’t want to spend the money on it. I occasionally wear some eye make-up for special occasions, but that’s it.
I’m sorry to hear that you are still having polar weather and that you’re sick! Today was gorgeous–50 degrees and sunny–so I went hiking with some friends. An unexpectedly springy weekend for me!
Hallie aren’t they so fun? I love my niece but boy do they have energy too. I feel lacking most times with her. I never got taught in the makeup arena either that’s why I am struggling at this age lol! I’m jealous of your spring weather but glad you could enjoy it 🙂
I love this new series! It’s fun getting to know you better. I loooove makeup but I so admire that you don’t wear it! I’d like to get more comfortable going without it! I say keep skipping on it if you are comfortable without it! But it is fun to play with new beauty stuff. 🙂
Thanks Sarah!! I tried three out of five days last week and it was a lot of work lol! But I’ll keep experimenting. You have any suggestions??
I have to agree with the cuisinart ice cream maker too… I love mine! My foundation also doesn’t last more than a couple hours too, but am too lazy to go out and look for others, haha. I have no clue as to what One Direction sings!! I’m loving this new section of the blog!!!
Oooo it looks like the Cuisinart is the way to go. I will definitely look into that. Thanks! I’ll let you know if a primer helps me for the foundation. I was thinking of trying Clinique because I girlfriend said they have nice ones for my brown skin. And oh feel blessed and lucky you have no clue what One Direction
I am oddly in love with 12 year old girls-whenever I babysit for them it’s the most fun ever. We just gab and hang and it’s awesome lol.
Hahhah they really are fun. But also make m wonder if I am ready for kids in this decade
There are rules to selfies!? I have so much to learn. Maybe I am hopeless in my old age. I was schooled by 2 tweens at Thanksgiving dinner on how to use snapchat and it was sort of traumatic to realize how much I didn’t know. I do know that little tidbit about one direction. Man, they can really crush your soul if you listen to them too much. Ha! If you find a good ice cream maker, let us know! I’m in the market for one too.
Lol Nora, there is so much to learn from these kids I tell you. I tried Snapchat too, she showed me but it was too instantaneous for me and I gave up. I’m glad you are up on One Direction though. It’s looking like Cuisinart is the popular recommendation on the ice cream maker. I’ll let you know 🙂
Here I am, 16, and I didn’t know there were rules to selfies! 🙂 Haha, if I had a phone, I would probably learned that sooner or later … thank you for enlightening me before I made any mistakes lol. Ooh, I can’t wait for the ice cream maker! I love ours to pieces. I need to take the plunge and get a donut pan. It has been on my list for months! As for makeup, I always use a primer (since powder by itself doesn’t agree with my face either 🙂 and CoverGirl or Maybelline have been good for me. Praying you feel better soon! P.S. You and your niece are both beautiful!
Hhahah Mary Frances, it’s a good thing you don’t know dear! So complicated lol. And a donut pan is on my list too. But the boy is not letting me accumulate anymore pans I will not be using regularly. Thanks for the primer recommendations. I’ll look at Target the next time I’m there 🙂
Hope you are having a great week and weekend. I’ll catch up with you soon!
I love my Cuisinart ice cream maker. I use it all the time. I don’t know how much they cost, I got mine at a yard sale, it was still in box, brand new, wedding gift that they didn’t want, paid $2, yay.
Thanks Patricia!! I’m being drawn to the Cuisinart because a few of you love it. I wish I can be as lucky as you though.
My Cuisinart ice cream maker it the best. Kohl’s and Sur la Table usually have them on sale for less than $50. Plus there are so many beautiful colors to chose from.
I love Maskcara: http://www.maskcara.com/ when it comes to make up tips. I am so clueless when it comes to makeup and she makes it seem doable.
Hope you feel better soon honey. I’m struggling with a crazy head cold this weekend that makes it nearly impossible to breathe through my nose.
Thank you so much Jamie for the suggestion! I’ll check out the Cuisinart maker. Looks like a few of you love it 🙂 I’m spending a few hours on her site. She makes everything looks so easy. Thanks for that link 😉
Feel better too dear! Have a great weekend 🙂
Love this new “beyond the oven” segment! Sorry to hear you’re sick, my partner is arriving back from a trip to India today and he tells me he is feeling unwell – oh great!!
Thanks Yolanda!! Tell your man to keep his diseases to himself lol coz mine did not and now I am paying the price 🙁
Ice Cream maker!!! yay!!!!!!! I can’t wait for your ice cream posts!!!!!!! And you should totally watch these videos on YouTube for the makeup thingy! I just splurged on new makeup watching these videos! Damn, they’re addictive! Having the flu is the worst thing ever! 🙁 I hope you get well sooooooon! Take care! 🙂
I’d love to check out some videos. You have any favorites? Leave me a link please 🙂 I’m couch ridden for now and just watching tv to recover lol! Hope you are having a great weekend.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lAboZJhWXYk This is just one of the videos from Alix’s Channel – I Covet Thee! You’ll enjoy watching it, plus they are actually easy to follow! Aww!!! In a way, you finally get to just sit back and relax!!! Take care!!!! <3 You too, have an amazing weekend!
