There’s nothing more heartwarming than baking cookies as a gift for family and friends. The best cookies are always homemade, and I love filling my kitchen with trays of cookies and creating holiday cookie boxes with them.

I’m sharing my easy guide for how to make your holiday cookie box. I’m also sharing my favorite holiday cookie recipes with the links so you can make them too.

What you will need to create this fun, thoughtful gift

How to Make a Holiday Cookie Box

Grab a gift box and open it up. To keep the sides open, place a piece of tape on the sides and bottom and create an L shape from the bottom to the side. This will help keep the box open.

Cut the cake board into different rectangular sizes, the depth of the gift box. Place a piece of tape on each side to connect them. Place them wherever you want, or the size of the cookies.

What are the best holiday cookie recipes?

These cookies are classic holiday cookies that everyone will love. They are also the cookies I chose to include in our cookie gift box:

    • Chocolate Chip Christmas M&M Cookies
    • Christmas Sugared Cookies
    • Snickerdoodles
    • Peanut Butter Blossoms
    • Mexican Chocolate Crinkle Cookies
    • Snowball Cookies
    • Dipped Oreos- This is simple, melt almond bark and dip the Oreo into the almond bark. Place on wax paper and allow to harden. You can add sprinkles or even more melted almond bark in a design.
    • You can use cupcake wrappers to hold candy, pretzels, and even smaller cookies.
    • You can add store-bought cookies as well. I added miniature gingerbread cookies, chocolate-covered pretzels, and even a few favorite candies.
    • I added chocolate peppermint bark to this gift box. Now I would suggest if you were gifting this I would add the bark to cellophane or a small bag. This will help keep the mint flavor in the bark. Sometimes that mint flavor will spread and before you know it all the cookies will have a mint taste.
    • There is no right or wrong cookie to add to this fun gift box. If I’m making these for a family with little ones, I will also try to add cookies that the kids will like. Therefore, the whole family can enjoy the gift.

Where can I find the best cookie boxes?

I also purchased an assortment of gift boxes through Walmart, but you can also purchase wooden keepsake boxes as well for this project. You’ll find wonderful cookie gift boxes at Michaels and on Etsy.

How long does it take to make holiday cookie boxes?

How long should you set aside time to create these fun holiday gift boxes? I’m always baking like a busy woman during December, so when I plan out these gift boxes, I will bake all the cookies in one day, then set up an assembly line with the gift boxes and start filling them away.

When to start this cookie project

Pick a date you would like to mail or gift these DIY holiday cookie boxes. Then work backward.

If you want to give these gifts away around Dec 20th, you will probably spend Dec 19th assembling the boxes. Either pick a day to bake all of your cookies, like I do, or bake the cookies when you can and put the cookies in the freezer until you are ready to assemble the boxes.

    How to store cookies

Cookie boxes are fun to make but they’re also a lot of work. To make your life easier you can bake the cookies throughout the month and keep them stored in the freezer in airtight containers. Here’s a simple cookie storage guide to help you store homemade cookies. Always store them in an airtight container:

    • they last 2-3 weeks at room temperature
    • 2 months in the refrigerator
    • 12 months in the freezer
